“The Kiss of Life”
On July 17, 1967, Florida lineman Randall Champion was hit with 4,000 volts of electricity after touching a high-voltage line. His heart stopped instantly. His coworker and friend J.D. Thompson rushed to help, climbing up and giving him mouth-to-mouth until paramedics arrived. Champion survived and even went back to work the next week.
By chance, Rocco Morabito, a photographer for the Jacksonville Journal, was below and captured the dramatic moment. His photo, later called “The Kiss of Life,” became one of the most powerful images ever taken.
