Ireland plans to buy first fighter jets in 50 years
Ireland’s planned purchase of combat jets and the development of a long-overdue national radar system mark a historic turning point in the country’s approach to air defence, ending decades of reliance on the United Kingdom to protect Irish skies.
Since 1998, when the Irish Air Corps disbanded its Light Strike Squadron, which operated aging French Fouga CM170 Magister jets, Ireland has had no combat jets. The country also lacks a primary radar system. Without these capabilities, a “secret bilateral pact” has seen the UK’s Royal Air Force (RAF) tasked with intercepting and responding to aerial threats in Irish airspace.
According to former Irish Air Corps head General Ralph James, this reliance on a foreign power, coupled with Ireland’s lack of radar coverage, has made the country “probably the most vulnerable” in Europe. Speaking at the Slándáil 2020 security summit, James warned that neutrality alone was not a defence strategy, stressing that Ireland must be able to deny its airspace to both sides in any future conflict.

Photographer tracked down people he captured 40 years ago to recriate their photos
Street photographer Chris Porsz spent the 1970s, 80s, and 90s walking through the streets of Peterborough, capturing spontaneous portraits of everyday life.
Decades later, in the 2010s, he began the incredible task of finding those same people to recreate the exact moments he once photographed.
The project resulted in two books — Reunions (2016) and Reunions II (2020) — featuring more than 300 portraits revived across generations. “I wanted to celebrate the passage of time and the resilience of the human spirit,” Porsz explains.
The result is a living time capsule — a bridge between past and present, where ordinary faces become extraordinary stories.

This black hole flare was 10 trillion times brighter than our Sun and 10 billion light years away and we’re just now seeing it.
In 2018 a distant supermassive black hole designated J2245+3743 suddenly flared up , not just a bit, but by a factor of ~40, becoming 30× more luminous than any previously recorded black-hole flare. Scientists believe it shredded a star at least 30× the Sun’s mass, and the light we see now left that region ~10 billion years ago.
If you converted our Sun’s entire mass into energy (E = mc²), you’d be in the ballpark of what this flare output while we observed it.
Unimaginable scale. Real event. And we’re looking back in time. 🌌 #Space #Universe
