Putin offers Russian and Ukrainian rare minerals to US
Russian President Vladimir Putin said he is open to offering the US access to rare minerals, including from Russian-occupied Ukraine.
This comes after US President Donald Trump has repeatedly pushed for Ukraine to give up some of its minerals in exchange for support, in a deal which is currently being finalised, according to a Ukrainian minister.

Since the outbreak of the war, Hungarian PM Viktor Orbán has paid Putin more than €15 billion for Russian gas and oil, becoming the biggest financier of the Russian war in the EU.
Since the outbreak of the Russian-Ukrainian war on 24 February 2022, Hungary has purchased gas and oil from Russia for a total of EUR 15.6 billion. According to data from the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air, an independent research institute in Finland, this makes the Orbán government the largest EU financier of Putin’s war. According to 444.hu, while many EU countries have drastically reduced their dependence on Russian energy sources, Hungary has taken a different path. Italy reduced its Russian gas imports from 43% in 2020 to 5% in 2024.
Austria announced it had found alternative routes, eliminating its dependence on Russian gas. Moreover, the Czech Republic and Poland had previously declared their independence from Russian gas. In contrast, Hungary has increased its gas imports from Russia to unprecedented levels.

"Putin couldn't be happier" over Trump-Zelenskyy meeting, Trump's former national security adviser says
An Oval Office showdown between President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy would have been cheered by Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster, who served as Mr. Trump's national security adviser during his first administration.
The U.S. imposed sanctions on Russia and provided aid to Ukraine after the war began but last month, Mr. Trump flipped U.S. policy on its head. He opened peace talks with Russia, which occupies 20% of Ukraine while bombing the rest, and did not invite Ukraine. Then on Friday, he berated Zelenskyy during an explosive Oval Office meeting.
"Vladimir Putin couldn't be happier," McMaster, who is a CBS News contributor and author of "At War with Ourselves: My Tour of Duty in the Trump White House," said. "Because what he sees is all of the pressure on Zelenskyy, all of the pressure on Ukraine and no pressure on him."
Trump and Russia
During his Friday Oval Office meeting with Zelenskyy, Mr. Trump revealed something of a common cause with the Russian president. Mr. Trump complained that he and Putin had both been slandered for years by allegations that Russia helped Mr. Trump's campaigns, allegations the U.S. president ties to his Democratic opponents.
"Putin went through a hell of a lot with me. He went through a phony witch hunt where they used him and Russia, Russia," Mr. Trump said.
McMaster, who was ousted by Mr. Trump in 2018, said Putin has manipulated many world leaders, including the U.S. commander in chief.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy welcomed President Trump's new sanctions on Russian oil giants Rosneft and Lukoil, calling them "a significant step," but insisted that Ukraine still desperately needs long-range missiles to pressure Vladimir Putin into serious negotiations.
In an exclusive interview with Axios, Zelenskyy estimated that Trump's sanctions could slash Russia's oil exports by 50%, costing Moscow up to $5 billion monthly. However, he warned bluntly: "sanctions alone won't stop" Putin.
The Shift in Trump's Approach
The Ukrainian leader revealed details of his tense October 17 White House meeting with Trump, which he diplomatically called "constructive" but acknowledged "wasn't easy." During that meeting, Trump rejected Ukraine's request for Tomahawk cruise missiles, citing escalation concerns.
But after Putin stuck to maximalist demands and diplomatic talks stalled, Trump cancelled a planned Putin summit and imposed the first direct sanctions on Russia since taking office — a dramatic U-turn.
Ceasefire Plan in the Works
Zelenskyy announced that Ukraine and its allies will finalize a ceasefire plan within the next 10 days following discussions with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The plan will be "short, without too many details" and modeled loosely on Trump's Gaza approach.
The Ukrainian president said he accepted Trump's proposal to freeze current front lines as the basis for negotiations, though he remains skeptical Putin will accept any peace proposal.
"We Need More Pressure"
"We speak not only about Tomahawks. The U.S. has a lot of similar things that don't require much time for training. I think the way to work with Putin is only through pressure," Zelenskyy told Axios.
He argued that Ukraine wouldn't even need to use the missiles immediately — just the threat of strikes on Russia's energy facilities could bring Putin to the negotiating table.
